List of Deputy Chief Ministers

1. Sri R. Sankar (1960–1962)

R. Sankar was the first Deputy Chief Minister of Kerala, serving under Chief Minister Pattom A. Thanu Pillai. A senior Congress leader, he simultaneously handled the Finance portfolio. Sankar’s tenure was marked by efforts to stabilise Kerala’s administration and economy. After Pattom resigned in 1962, Sankar himself became the Chief Minister of Kerala, becoming the state’s first Christian CM.

2. Sri C. H. Mohammed Koya (1981–1982, 1982–1983)

C. H. Mohammed Koya of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) was Kerala’s second Deputy Chief Minister. He served twice under K. Karunakaran’s ministries. Koya, a respected Muslim League leader and educationist, is remembered for his contributions to minority education and community development. His second term ended abruptly with his death in 1983. Notably, he also had a brief stint as Kerala’s Chief Minister in 1979, making him the first and only Muslim CM of Kerala to date.

3. Sri K. Avukader Kutty Naha (1983–1987)

K. Avukader Kutty Naha, also from the IUML, succeeded Koya as the third Deputy Chief Minister. He held office under Karunakaran’s third ministry until 1987. Known for his administrative efficiency and clean image, Naha was a prominent figure in Malabar politics. He was instrumental in strengthening the IUML’s role within the United Democratic Front (UDF) alliance. After his tenure, the Deputy CM post was abolished in Kerala and has not been revived since.

Summary

  • Kerala has had only three Deputy Chief Ministers in history.
  • All belonged to either the Indian National Congress (INC) or the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML).

The post has remained vacant since 25 March 1987, following Naha’s tenure.
