S. M. Krishna was the first Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka, appointed in 1993 during Veerappa Moily’s government. A seasoned leader from the Indian National Congress, Krishna represented the Maddur constituency. His tenure as Deputy CM was marked by administrative reforms and support for his Chief Minister in balancing intra-party politics. Later, he became the Chief Minister (1999–2004), remembered for transforming Bengaluru into India’s IT hub.
J. H. Patel served as Deputy CM under Chief Minister H. D. Deve Gowda from 1994 to 1996. A senior Janata Dal leader from Channagiri, Patel was known for his administrative skills and calm approach to governance. When Gowda moved to Delhi as Prime Minister, Patel succeeded him as the Chief Minister of Karnataka (1996–1999).
Siddaramaiah held the Deputy CM post in J. H. Patel’s government from 1996 to 1999. Representing Chamundeshwari, he played a crucial role in implementing welfare programs for farmers and backward classes. His rise from grassroots politics gave him credibility as a mass leader. He later became Chief Minister twice (2013–2018 and 2023–present).
In 2004, Siddaramaiah again served as Deputy CM under Chief Minister Dharam Singh, this time representing the Janata Dal (Secular). His second tenure was marked by political instability as Congress and JD(S) shared power. Eventually, his exit from JD(S) led him to join Congress, where he emerged as one of the tallest leaders in Karnataka politics.
M. P. Prakash, a JD(S) stalwart from Hoovina Hadagali, became Deputy CM in 2005 when the Dharam Singh government collapsed and JD(S) reconfigured alliances. Known for his straightforward nature, Prakash was respected across party lines. His brief tenure reflected the turbulent coalition politics of that era.
Yediyurappa, representing Shikaripura, was appointed Deputy CM in 2006 when JD(S) and BJP formed a coalition government. This marked the first time BJP held such a high office in Karnataka. His role strengthened BJP’s base in the state. He later became the first BJP Chief Minister of Karnataka in 2008.
R. Ashoka was appointed Deputy CM under Jagadish Shettar in 2012, representing the Padmanabhanagar constituency. A senior BJP leader, he handled transport and home portfolios, focusing on urban development and law & order.
Alongside R. Ashoka, K. S. Eshwarappa also served as Deputy CM in Shettar’s cabinet. Representing Shivamogga, Eshwarappa was the state BJP president earlier and held key responsibilities in strengthening the party’s organizational network.
Dr. Parameshwara of the Indian National Congress became Deputy CM under the coalition government led by H. D. Kumaraswamy in 2018. Representing Koratagere, he was the first Dalit leader to hold the Deputy CM’s post. His tenure was focused on social justice and stabilizing the Congress-JD(S) alliance, though the coalition eventually collapsed.
Ashwath Narayan, representing Malleshwaram, was appointed as one of three Deputy CMs in the B. S. Yediyurappa government. A medical doctor by profession, he brought focus on higher education, technology, and Bengaluru’s development during his tenure.
Govind Karjol from Mudhol was another Deputy CM in Yediyurappa’s cabinet (2019–2021). A veteran BJP leader from a Scheduled Caste background, he was entrusted with public works and social welfare portfolios, symbolizing the party’s social engineering strategy.
Laxman Savadi, an MLC from Athani, also served as Deputy CM in the 2019 BJP government. Though not directly elected to the Assembly at that time, he was included to balance regional and community representation.
D. K. Shivakumar, a strongman from Kanakapura, became Deputy CM in May 2023 under Siddaramaiah’s leadership. A senior Congress strategist and mass leader, he is known for his organizational skills, crisis management, and resource mobilization. His tenure is seen as balancing Vokkaliga representation in the Congress government.
