2. Jyoti Basu (1967–1970)

  • Served as Deputy CM in two United Front coalition governments before taking over as CPI(M)’s tallest leader.
  • Focused on land reforms, workers’ rights, and coalition management as Deputy CM.
  • Later became CM and ruled Bengal for 23 years, becoming the longest-serving Chief Minister in India’s history.

3. Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee (2000)

  • Served only 1 day as Deputy CM when Jyoti Basu stepped down.
  • Immediately elevated to Chief Minister, continuing Left Front governance until 2011.
  • Known for attempts to modernize Bengal’s economy and attract investment.
