1. M. K. Stalin (2009–2011)

M. K. Stalin, son of DMK patriarch M. Karunanidhi, was appointed as the first Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in 2009. Representing the Thousand Lights constituency, he was given charge of important portfolios such as rural development, housing, and urban infrastructure. His appointment signalled the DMK’s succession planning, grooming him as Karunanidhi’s political heir. Stalin used this tenure to gain administrative experience, focusing on welfare schemes and grassroots governance. This period laid the foundation for his eventual rise as the Chief Minister in 2021.

2. O. Panneerselvam (2017–2021)

O. Panneerselvam, popularly known as OPS, became Deputy Chief Minister in August 2017 after a power-sharing arrangement within the AIADMK. Representing Bodinayakanur, OPS had already served as acting Chief Minister multiple times after Jayalalithaa’s disqualification and death. His appointment as Deputy CM was part of a compromise with Edappadi K. Palaniswami to stabilise the AIADMK. As Deputy CM, he handled the Finance portfolio and played a balancing role within the party. His image as a humble and loyal leader helped him gain respect, though his influence gradually declined after AIADMK’s electoral loss in 2021.

3. Udhayanidhi Stalin (2024–Present)

Udhayanidhi Stalin, son of current Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, assumed office as the third Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on 28 September 2024. Representing the Chepauk–Thiruvallikeni constituency, Udhayanidhi had earlier served as Minister for Youth Welfare and Sports. His elevation marked the consolidation of the Stalin family’s leadership within the DMK. As Deputy CM, he focuses on youth welfare, employment generation, and urban development. His tenure is closely watched, as he is considered the next-generation leader of the DMK, continuing the political legacy of both Karunanidhi and M. K. Stalin.
