List of Madhya Pradesh Chief Ministers

1. Ravishankar Shukla (1956)

  • First CM of reorganized Madhya Pradesh (earlier Madhya Bharat, Vindhya Pradesh, Bhopal merged).
  • His sudden death in 1956 ended his short tenure.

2. Dwarka Prasad Mishra (1967–1969)

  • Known as an intellectual politician.
  • Promoted education reforms in the state.

3. Shyama Charan Shukla (1969–1992, three terms)

  • Prominent Congress leader.
  • Oversaw industrial expansion in Raipur and Chhattisgarh region.

4. Prakash Chandra Sethi (1972–1977)

  • Strengthened Indore as a commercial hub.
  • Later became Union Minister of Defence.

5. Kailash Joshi (1977–1978)

  • First non-Congress CM of MP (Janata Party).
  • Known as “Saaf Suthre Neta” (clean politician).

6. Arjun Singh (1980s)

  • His tenure was marked by Bhopal Gas Tragedy (1984).
  • Controversial role in crisis handling but also introduced welfare policies.

7. Digvijaya Singh (1993–2003)

  • Served 10 years (longest continuous tenure till then).
  • Focused on Panchayati Raj reforms and rural infrastructure.

8. Uma Bharti (2003–2004)

  • First woman CM of MP.
  • Known as a fiery leader, resigned after court cases.

9. Shivraj Singh Chouhan (2005–2018, 2020–2023)

  • Nicknamed “Mama” (uncle) for welfare schemes targeting women and children.
  • Launched Ladli Laxmi Yojana, Bhavantar Bhugtan Yojana.
