Indian Nobel Laureates

Chief Minister of Chhatisgrah

1. Ajit Jogi (2000–2003)

Ajit Jogi was the first Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh after its creation on 1 November 2000. A senior Congress leader and bureaucrat-turned-politician, Jogi emphasized setting up state institutions, building infrastructure, and empowering tribal communities. His government focused on administrative foundations, but his tenure was marred by factional politics within the Congress.

2. Raman Singh (2003–2018)

Raman Singh of the BJP is the longest-serving Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, holding office for 15 consecutive years (three terms). He earned the nickname “Chawal Wale Baba” (Rice Baba) for launching the cheap rice scheme for the poor. His tenure emphasized:

  • PDS reforms (Public Distribution System).
  • Industrial and mining expansion.
  • Infrastructure in tribal and Maoist-affected regions.
He brought political stability to the state but also faced criticism over Maoist violence and land acquisition issues.

3. Bhupesh Baghel (2018–2023)

Bhupesh Baghel of Congress became CM in 2018 after the party’s big win. He focused on farmer welfare, loan waivers, and tribal rights. Major initiatives included:

  • NYAY Scheme for income support.
  • Godhan Nyay Yojana to purchase cow dung from farmers.
  • Boosting local industries and handlooms.
Baghel also strengthened OBC representation in state politics. His leadership gave Congress its strongest base in Chhattisgarh in two decades.

4. Vishnu Deo Sai (2023–Present)

Vishnu Deo Sai, a tribal leader from the BJP, became CM in December 2023. Representing Kunkuri constituency, he is the first tribal Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh. His appointment reflects BJP’s strategy to strengthen its tribal outreach. Sai’s government has been focusing on infrastructure, welfare schemes for farmers and tribals, and tackling Maoist insurgency.
