Jharkhand, formed in 2000, has mostly been politically unstable with frequent changes of Chief Ministers. Unlike states such as Andhra Pradesh or Karnataka, the post of Deputy CM has been used sparingly in Jharkhand. It has mainly been created for coalition management and caste/tribal balance rather than as a permanent institution.
Leader of the AJSU Party, Sudesh Mahto was Deputy CM in the BJP-led government of Arjun Munda. He handled portfolios related to road construction, sports, and youth affairs. A strong leader from the Kurmi community, his role balanced caste and regional equations.
A senior JMM tribal leader, Hemlal Murmu briefly held the Deputy CM position in the same Arjun Munda cabinet. He focused on tribal rights and rural welfare, but internal politics cut short his tenure.
Although often discussed as a possible Deputy CM in 2009, he was never formally sworn in as Deputy CM. Instead, he later became the first non-tribal CM of Jharkhand (2014–2019).
