For engineering aspirants in India, the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), is a crucial milestone. For most students appearing for the JEE (Mains), the aim, when they appear for the exam, is to be in the top 250,000 and qualify for the JE (Advanced). This in turn will lead them to India’s premier engineering institutes – the IITs. As your overwhelming journey of preparing for and writing the JEE ends, soon the results will be announced, bringing with them a whirlwind of emotions—excitement, relief, confusion, and, sometimes, anxiety. Whatever your result, it is essential to analyse it clearly and plan your next steps strategically.

Understanding the JEE Scores

The JEE results are expressed in percentile, All India Rank (AIR), and category rank (if applicable). Here's what each term means:

  • Percentile score: it reflects your performance in comparison with other candidates who appeared for the exam. For instance, if your percentile is 90%, then you performed better than 90% of the candidates.
  • All India Rank (AIR): it is a rank assigned to your performance relative to all candidates. The AIR determines your eligibility for various engineering colleges, including IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs.
  • Category Rank: If you belong to a reserved category (SC/ST/OBC/EWS), the category rank indicates your position among other candidates in your category. This is crucial for seat allocation in institutions with reserved seats.
  • Normalised Scores: as JEE is conducted in multiple sessions, the scores are normalised to account for differences in difficulty levels across sessions. This percentile is calculated using a normalised score.

What your scores mean

  • JEE Advanced Eligibility: the top 2,50,000 students are eligible to appear for the JEE Advanced. The cut-off varies each year. Candidates who qualify for the JEE Advanced become eligible to apply to the IITs.
  • Counselling: The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) conducts the counselling process for seat allocation in IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs.
  • Documentation: at the time of counselling, the required documents like scorecards, category certificates, and academic transcripts are checked.
  • Application to private universities: candidates who perform well in JEE paper one is eligible to apply to IISc, NIT, IIIT, and other government-aided and private colleges.
  • Reattempt (if applicable): If you feel you can improve or you plan to reattempt for better scores to get admission to your coveted programme and college, then you can reappear for JEE in the next session. Every candidate can appear for the JEE Main exam 6 times over three consecutive years. The JEE Main exam is held two times every year, in January and April.

Calculating JEE Mains ranks from marks

It is tricky to find one’s exact rank based on one’s marks, however, understanding the connection between the two can help understand where one stands. The relationship between marks and rank alters every year but one can get some assessment based on historical trends. Candidates will have to meet the JEE Main cut-off criteria for the preferred courses and colleges to be eligible for the respective seat allocation and admission process.

The JEE Main results can be accessed on the National Testing Agency (NTA)website. These can be checked on jeemain.nta.ac.in or ntaresults.nic.in. The cut-off percentages vary each session based on factors such as the number of candidates appearing for the exam, the difficulty level of the questions, and the overall performance of the candidates. Generally, the cut-offs are –

  • General category – 90
  • EWS - 80
  • Other Backward Classes (OBC)/NCL - 76
  • Scheduled Caste (SC) - 56
  • Scheduled Tribe (ST) - 47
  • PwD - 0.0031029

The projected cut-off percentile for JEE Mains 2025 is –

  • ST - 28-34
  • SC - 44-52
  • OBC - 65-72
  • General - 85-90
  • EWS - 68-72

JEE Mains is a highly competitive exam with lakhs of students from across India are appearing for. The process of preparing for the exams can help one understand where their strengths lie and make the right decision about which college and course to apply for. Analyse your performance honestly, explore your options wisely, and remain resilient in pursuing your dreams. With determination and the right strategy, success is within your grasp—whether through a top engineering college, a unique specialisation, or an unconventional pathway.
