The journey towards Republic Day was much before 1950. While India had managed to free herself from the rule of the Brits on the 15th of August, 1947, the country hadn't yet had a proper framework for governance even then. A country newly attaining independence used to function initially under the not-so-ideal colonial Government of India Act.
A Constituent Assembly was formed in 1946 by representatives from all regions and communities of India, which recognised the need for a strong and democratic system. The Indian Constitution was adopted on 26th November 1949, nearly three years after a thorough discussion under the supervision of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. It came into effect on 26 January 1950 because that date marks the declaration made by the Indian National Congress in Lahore in 1930 about Indian independence on that day.
This was the moment in history when India became a sovereign, socialist, secular, and democratic republic based on the rule of law and the principles of equality and justice.

The Constitution also lists the Fundamental Duties, urging every Indian to contribute to the nation's progress by promoting unity, respect for diversity, and environment conservation.
Republic Day speaks of the sacrifices made by numerous freedom fighters and the visionaries in their dreams of a free and self-governing India. It is the occasion to think about how far we have advanced in fulfilling the ideals embodied in the Constitution.
India has taken its most significant strides since 1950; it emerged as a world leader in many spheres: technology, space, medicine, and sports, but with still some work needed to wipe away poverty, inequality, and corruption that still torment India today.
